Features We Love
  • Dreamy Driving Experience: This SUV drives like a car—smooth, powerful, and honestly fun. It doesn’t feel like a big three-row at all, which is a huge win.
  • Stunning Interior Details: From the crystal-style shifter to the high-gloss finishes and panoramic sunroof, this interior feels elevated and truly luxurious.
  • Impressive Third Row Comfort: The third row is actually spacious, with great headroom, heated seats, and even its own sunroof—rare for this class.
  • Smart Trunk Design: The split tailgate (aka the “watermelon catcher”) makes loading and unloading so much easier—especially on hills or with a full Costco haul.

Car Mom Review

The Exterior

2021 BMW X7 Review: A Dream SUV… But Is It Family-Friendly?

If you’ve ever had your eye on a luxury SUV that feels like a dream, the 2021 BMW X7 is probably already on your list. And I get it—this car is stunning. But as always, we’re putting it to the test through a real mom lens: car seats, strollers, and everyday functionality.

Because as much as we love a pretty car… it still has to work for your life.

First Impressions: This SUV Is a Showstopper

Let’s just say it—this is one of the best-looking SUVs on the road.

From the signature BMW kidney grille to the chrome detailing and sleek LED headlights, the X7 absolutely delivers on curb appeal. The mineral white exterior paired with blackout wheels? Obsessed.

It’s bold, it’s elevated, and it definitely gives luxury energy the second you see it.

First Row

Interior: Luxury Meets Sporty

Inside, the X7 leans more sporty luxury than ultra-soft traditional luxury (like Lexus or Mercedes). Think:

  • Clean design with contrast stitching
  • High-gloss finishes and wood trim
  • A gorgeous crystal-style shifter (truly the star of the show)
  • Panoramic sunroof + an extra sunroof in the third row

And while some small details feel slightly less premium (looking at you, plasticky buttons), overall the cabin still feels elevated—especially in higher trims.

Tech Highlights: Cool… Maybe Too Cool?

BMW packs this car with tech, and some of it is genuinely useful:

  • Heads-up display (a huge win for safety)
  • Fully digital gauge cluster with navigation
  • Large, user-friendly touchscreen

And then… there are the “experience modes.”

Yes, you can press a button for “Wellbeing” or “Expressive” and your car will adjust lighting, shades, and vibes accordingly. Is it necessary? No. Is it kind of fun? Also yes.

Second Row

Second Row: Comfortable, But Go Captain’s Chairs

The X7 offers both a bench and captain’s chairs—but here’s the deal:

Get the captain’s chairs.

The bench is narrow and not super functional. The captain’s chairs, on the other hand:

  • Feel spacious and comfortable
  • Offer great legroom (even for taller drivers)
  • Include climate control, USB-C ports, and heated seats

It’s a solid second row… as long as you’re not trying to maximize seating.

Third Row

Third Row: Surprisingly Comfortable (Once You Get There)

If you can actually get back there, the third row is better than expected:

  • Good legroom and headroom
  • Heated seats (!!)
  • Ceiling vents (great for airflow)
  • A mini sunroof (so cute)

But the power seat controls are… a lot. Everything takes time to move, and it’s not super intuitive.

Trunk

Trunk Space: Mom-Approved

The split tailgate is a standout feature here:

  • Bottom portion acts like a “watermelon catcher” (nothing rolls out—genius)
  • Great for loading/unloading
  • Power-folding third row for extra cargo space

It’s functional, thoughtful, and honestly one of my favorite parts of the car.

Safety

Car Seat Setup

Car Seat Reality Check

Let’s talk about what really matters.

Yes, there are tether anchors and LATCH positions in every row, which is great.

BUT…

This is not a great car for multiple car seats + using the third row regularly.

Here’s why:

  • No car-seat-friendly tilt mechanism
  • Extremely limited access to the third row
  • Tight pass-through space (even for kids in boosters)

If you’re planning to use all three rows and have car seats installed—this is going to be frustrating.
