The Car Mom FAQs
Are rotating car seats ever considered slim?
The Evenflo Revolve360 Slim is a very narrow seat! At only 16.9" it can fit three across in most vehicles. In many three-across setups, however, it cannot rotate fully. It may spin outward for easier middle seat access, but unless there is a narrow, low-profile forward-facing car seat next to it, it likely cannot spin toward you to load a child. In a vehicle with a wider bench (full size SUVs, VW Atlas, Honda Pilot, and Ford F150, etc.) it will rotate fully or nearly fully for easy loading.
What’s the difference between a slim car seat and a regular convertible car seat?
Car seats can range from just under 17" to over 21" wide. Those extra 3-4" (times 3) make a huge difference when fitting seats next to each other. Slim car seats are not a downgrade in safety, they are simply designed differently to fit next to another car seat or person.
Can you fit 3 car seats across with slim car seats?
Yes, with the right car seats in most vehicles! (link to three-across article).
What’s the best slim convertible seat?
The Graco SlimFit3 LX 3 in 1 and Chicco Fit3X are the most narrow and versatile options measuring in at 16.7" wide. Other narrow seats like the Britax Poplar or Romer Veni (17") can be excellent choices as well.
What’s the best slim infant seat?
All infant car seats are relatively slim. If you need to fit adjacent car seats, the convertible car seat width is more important! Something to consider is that a seat belt installation will provide the most room. A rigid-lower-anchor-baseless seat may not be the best choice because it optimizes a lower anchor install, not seat belt. If a baseless seat fits your lifestyle best, consider using one with an optional base like the Graco GoMax or Joie Mint Latch with base anti-rebound.
What’s the best slim booster seat?
A narrow booster can make buckling next to another car seat easier. The Peg Flex 120 is both narrow and does not have armrests, leaving more space for reaching the seat belt buckle. The Chicco KidFit is relatively slim and offers a belt buckle cut-out for easier buckle access.
What Car Seats Have Higher Lower Anchor Weight Limits?
Several car seats offer a 45-pound forward-facing lower anchor weight limit, including the Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1 and the Graco SlimFit3 LX.
What Is The Best Convertible Car Seat To Use From Birth?
The Chicco OneFit LX is a great option from birth because of its lower harness height, which helps provide a better fit for newborns. For a rotating option, we like the Evenflo Revolve360 Slim.
Are Rotating Car Seats Safe?
Yes! Rotating car seats meet the same safety standards as non-rotating seats. Some options, like the Evenflo Revolve360 Slim, can also be used for multiple ages of children.
What Are The Best Car Seats For 3 Across?
Three-across setups can be tricky, so we recommend checking out our full guide for more help. Historically, the Graco SlimFit3 LX, Britax Poplar, and Chicco Fit3X tend to work well for three-across setups.
What Car Seats Are Best For Extended Rear-Facing?
Some of our favorite car seats for extended rear-facing are the Graco Extend2Fit 3-in-1, the Nuna RAVA, and the Axkid One 3.
I’m A Tall Driver. What Convertible Car Seat Would You Recommend?
We typically suggest choosing a convertible car seat that is compact front-to-back to help maximize front seat legroom. There are a few important things to consider when finding the best fit, and we’ve broken them all down in this blog!
My booster is so wide my child is having difficulty accessing the buckle.
Try a booster with cut outs like the Chicco Kidfit or a more narrow booster like a Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120. Remember, seat belt extenders are never safe for car seats or boosters.
What boosters work with non removable head restraints?
Depending on your car and your booster requirements, it can work. Here is a blog with more information.
When Can My Child Start Using A Booster Seat?
A child can move to a booster seat once they outgrow their harnessed car seat by height, weight, or torso height and meet the minimum requirements for their booster seat.
In general, if a child is at least 40 pounds, 43 inches tall, around 5 years old, and mature enough to sit properly for the entire ride, it can also be safe to make the switch to a booster seat.
What age can my child STOP using a booster?
The average child starts fitting an adult seat belt between the ages of 10-12. If your child passes the 5 step test, they are ready to ditch the booster! Keep in mind that a child may pass the 5 step test in one car, but fail in another so it's important to retest in every car they will be driving in!
What is the best booster for bigger kids?
A great option for bigger kids is the Diono Cambria 2 thanks to its wider seat design and taller height and weight limits. Another favorite is the Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120, which skips traditional armrests to give kids a little extra space and easier buckle access.
Do I Need To Buy A Booster Seat Or Should I Use My All-In-One Seat?
Both options are safe. A standalone booster seat often lasts longer, has a lower-profile design, and can be more comfortable for bigger kids.
Does My Booster Need To Be Installed With Lower Anchors?
No. Using lower anchors with a booster seat is a helpful feature, but it is not required. Lower anchors help keep the booster stable and secure the seat so it does not become a projectile when it’s empty.
The Peg Perego Viaggo Flex 120 offers lower anchor installation. We love this seat!
Highback or Backless?
It’s generally best practice to start with a high-back booster because it provides more support and helps encourage proper seating position. High-back boosters also offer some additional side protection, so we typically recommend using one until your child is a confident and consistent booster rider.
How do I know what my car seat and stroller will work together?
The stroller manufacturer will have a list of compatible car seats. You may need to buy an adapter to go on your stroller for the car seat to attach.
Is The Doona Worth It?
Stroller car seat combinations like the Doona can be convenient for families on the go, but they can also feel heavy and bulky because the wheels stay attached to the seat.
We generally prefer the Evenflo Shyft DualRide because the wheels can detach, giving you the option of a lighter carrier.
My car is really small, what car seat should I consider?
The Clek Liing is a compact car seat that still gives advanced safety features like rigid latch and a load leg. A Rigid lower anchor Baseless infant seat like the Joie Mint Latch is also a compact choice.
What Infant Seat Is Best For Premature Or Small Babies?
For premature or smaller babies, I typically recommend looking for an infant seat with a rethread harness, more adjustable harness positioning, and a lower minimum weight limit. The Chicco KeyFit30 checks all of those boxes and is one I frequently recommend for smaller newborns.
For especially specialized fits or unique situations, we also recommend using our ChatCPST service for a more customized recommendation.
What is a baseless infant seat?
A baseless infant seat installs without a separate base, using lower anchors attached directly to the car seat itself. This makes installation quick and convenient for families using multiple vehicles or needing easier third-row access. Baseless infant seats meet the same safety standards as all other car seats and are perfectly safe when installed correctly. We recommend considering the Joie Mint Latch!
What is an infant seat and do I really need one?
An infant seat is able to transport the baby in and out of the car and often attaches to a stroller. Multiple bases can be purchased so the child can easily ride in different cars. Although you dont technically need one, most families opt for an infant seat for the convenience.
What is the Best Family Car?
There isn’t one single “best” family car because every family is different. The right vehicle depends on your family’s size, your kids’ ages, how many car seats you need, your budget, and how you use your car every day.
For some families, the best option might be a midsize SUV with a third row. For others, a minivan might offer the easiest access for kids and the most cargo space. Larger families may need a full-size SUV, while a smaller family might be perfectly happy in a two-row SUV.
At The Car Mom, we believe the best family car is the one that fits your real life — your car seats, your stroller, your groceries, your road trips, and your daily chaos. That’s why our reviews focus on things that matter most to parents: safety, car seat compatibility, cargo space, convenience features, and overall value.
Instead of searching for the “best” car, focus on finding the best car for your family.
