The Exterior
A Fresh New Design
The Aviator received a complete redesign for the 2020 model year, and it immediately feels more modern than its predecessor. The bold front grille, sculpted hood lines, distinctive daytime running lights, and sleek body lines give it a refined appearance that helps it stand apart from its Ford Explorer sibling.
The side profile features unique Aviator badging, sporty black accents, and attractive wheel designs that give the SUV a premium look. While the rear light bar isn't my favorite design element, the rest of the exterior feels sophisticated and upscale.
First Row
A Premium Interior With Thoughtful Storage
Inside, the Aviator has a unique design that feels more like a luxury yacht than a traditional SUV. Rich wood trim, premium materials, and a fully digital instrument cluster create an upscale atmosphere.
One area where the Aviator really shines is storage. Between the open cubbies, hidden compartments beneath the center stack, oversized center console, and practical cup holders, there are plenty of places to stash everything from sunglasses and phones to snacks and diaper bag essentials.
The 30-way adjustable front seats are another standout feature. They offer an incredible amount of customization and provide exceptional comfort for long drives.
Second Row
Family-Friendly Car Seat Setup
For parents, the Aviator scores well when it comes to car seat installation.
Every rear seating position includes both lower anchors and a top tether anchor, giving families flexibility when installing multiple car seats. During testing, both rear-facing and forward-facing car seats fit well, though taller drivers may find rear-facing seats behind them a little tight due to the bulk of the front seats.
Second-row passengers also benefit from built-in window shades, multiple charging ports, and easy access to the third row with the push of a button.
Third Row
The third row offers two dedicated seats, making it a practical option for larger families. While it isn't the roomiest third row in the segment, it works well for kids and allows for additional car seat installations when needed.
Trunk
Behind the third row, cargo space is enough for groceries and everyday errands, but larger strollers may not fit with all seats in use. Folding the third row is simple thanks to the power-operated controls, creating a large, flat cargo floor with plenty of room for strollers, luggage, or sports equipment. Additional underfloor storage adds even more versatility for family gear.
