Features We Love

The Lexus GX was redesigned in 2024, the 2026 GX follows the redesign with no major changes.

  • Refreshed Exterior: Beautiful exterior upgrades really makes the Lexus GX more competitive aesthetically.
  • Upgraded Infotainment & Tech: It feels modern, but still usable. Large digital screen, climate controls permanently displayed, physical knobs for volume and temperature (thank goodness), wireless charger, USB-C ports + 12V.
  • Second Row Amenities: Ceiling vents, charging ports, heated and ventilated seats.
  • Two- or Three-Row Options: Two-row (Overtrail trims) for more cargo or three-row option for up to seven passengers.

Car Mom Review

The Exterior

The GX received a major redesign in 2024. There are no exterior upgrades to the 2026.

This new GX is:

  • Boxy
  • Sporty
  • Aggressive
  • And honestly? Giving G-Wagon vibes

The starting price is around $66,000, which puts it surprisingly close to the Land Cruiser but with more luxury refinement and that iconic Lexus polish. I love the exterior of this vehicle and if it weren't for some of the issues on the interior, this would be dream car status.

Boxy, Sporty, Aggressive!

First Row

Inside the cabin, the first thing I noticed was the headroom. It feels airy and spacious even before opening the sunroof.

That said, the GX is a little more narrow than I expected. I do feel slightly closer to my passenger than in some other midsize SUVs, so keep that in mind if width is important to you.

Infotainment System

Compared to the Land Cruiser, the GX leans much more digital. Fewer knobs and buttons but Lexus kept the important ones:

  • Permanent climate control display
  • Physical knobs for heat and volume (thank you)
  • Wireless charging
  • USB-C ports
  • 12V outlet

One surprise? No cool box in this trim — something the Land Cruiser offered. Personally, I’d rather have the storage space anyway.

Second Row

Second Row: Car Seat Reality Check

Now for what you really want to know: How car seat friendly is it?

Short answer: It works — but it’s not a three-across machine.

Space & Layout

  • Lower anchors on the outboard seats
  • Three tether anchors across the bench
  • Heated and ventilated second-row seats
  • Ceiling vents
  • Charging ports

What’s missing?
No built-in sunshades — which is disappointing at this price point.

Rear-Facing Fit

I tested two compact options:

  • Britax Poplar
  • Nuna Urbn

Both worked well especially the Nuna Urbn since it’s more compact front-to-back. If you’re tall and doing a traditional infant seat with a bulky base, it’s going to be tight.

I would not call this the most rear-facing-friendly SUV on the market. It works with the right seats, but rotating or deeply reclining seats could make things cramped.

And the doors? They do not open wide enough. When you’re lifting a 20-pound baby in and out, that matters.

Third Row

Third Row & Trunk: The Biggest Compromise

This is where things get tricky.

The GX offers either:

  • A two-row configuration (Overtrail trims)
  • Or a three-row setup

Third Row Access

It uses a 60/40 fold-and-flip mechanism, and I’ll give Lexus this — it gets out of the way.

Once back there, I was surprised.

  • My knees weren’t touching
  • My head wasn’t touching
  • There are ceiling vents, cup holders, and charging ports

It’s genuinely usable.

But.

When the third row is up, trunk space is extremely limited. We’re talking “I don’t even think my bum fits back there” limited.

It feels like an occasional-use third row, not an everyday three-row hauler.

And yes — I have safety questions about how shallow the cargo area feels behind that third row.

Also worth noting: no car seat attachments back there. So we’re talking boosters or adults only.

Trunk

Big Yikes.

The 2025 Lexus GX is offered in both a two-row and a three-row configuration.

  • The two-row version (most commonly found in the Overtrail and Overtrail Plus trims) seats up to five passengers and gives you more cargo space behind the second row.
  • The three-row version is available on other trims (like Premium and Luxury) and expands seating to up to seven with a third-row bench. You can hardly fit a gallon of milk in the trunk with the third row up. I would not recommend the three row GX for families who plan to use to the third row often.

Safety

As of early 2026, the fully redesigned 2026 Lexus GX (GX 550) hasn’t been crash tested by the IIHS or NHTSA yet, so there aren’t any official safety ratings available. That said, it does come standard with a strong lineup of driver-assist features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and active driving assistance — so you’re still getting a solid suite of modern safety tech.

Car Seat Setup

For 6 seater, lower anchors and tether in second row, one tether in the third row. For 7 seaters, lower anchor in outboard seats, tethers across bench. Third row has no carseat hardware.
