- Spacious Second & Third Rows: The second row offers excellent legroom (even for taller adults), and the third row is more usable than many competitors — especially when you slide the second row forward. Ceiling vents in both rows are also a huge plus for kids in rear-facing seats.
- Massive Center Console & Cup Holder Game: The front storage is impressive. The center console is deep and practical, and there are up to four cup holders within reach of the drive.
- Strong Towing Power (Up to 7,900 lbs): If you tow a boat, camper, or trailer, this is where the Tahoe shines. The V8 engine delivers solid power, and for families who need capability beyond carpool duty, this is a major advantage.
- Three Full Sets of Lower Anchors in the Second Row: This is a big win for families. Every seat across the second-row bench has its own set of lower anchors, plus tether anchors in all six rear seats. That gives you strong flexibility for three-across setups and multiple forward-facing installs.
The Exterior
The Chevy Tahoe was significantly redesigned for the 2021 model year, and while I was initially mixed on the exterior, it has grown on me.
The front end? Strong. Bold. Attractive.
Compared to competitors — including my beloved Expedition — the Tahoe has more visual interest and presence.
For 2025, Chevy introduced a refresh with updated tech and interior screens. I even went to Detroit for an exclusive preview. While the technology improved, the overall size, layout, and car seat functionality remained the same.
First Row
Front Seat Comfort & Mom Features
Let’s talk practicality.
The infotainment system in the 2021–2024 Tahoe is simple — and I’ve actually grown to love that. After a year in the Expedition with climate controls buried in the touchscreen, I deeply appreciate physical buttons.
What you’ll find:
- Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
- Heated steering wheel
- Heated seats
- Wireless charging pad
- USB + USB-C ports
- Multiple cup holders (though the sizing varies)
The center console is roomy and practical, and there are enough charging options for every device in your carpool.
Is it luxurious? Not especially.
Is it functional? Yes — and I’ve come to value that more over time.
Second Row
Second Row: Bench vs. Captain’s Chairs
The Tahoe offers both configurations, but I specifically tested the bench seat — and I was excited to finally get my hands on it.
Car Seat Fit: Excellent
- Wide bench — true three-across capability
- Lower anchors in all second-row seating positions
- Tether anchors across the back
- Great rear-facing clearance (even for tall drivers)
However, here’s where the comparison matters:
The Ford Expedition bench allows independent seat movement for each position. The Tahoe’s 60/40 split means two seats are connected.
With the Expedition, I could:
- Stagger my kids
- Improve buckling access
- Prevent sibling touching
That flexibility is something I really miss in the Tahoe.
Also: no car seat–friendly tilt for third-row access. If you have car seats installed, third-row entry becomes clunky.
Ventilation & Comfort
Things I love:
- Ceiling vents (direct airflow to rear-facing seats — huge win)
- USB-C ports
- Heated second-row seats
- Separate climate control
Things I wish were different:
- No sunshades (big miss for a family SUV)
- No vents on the back of the center console for extra airflow
Third Row
Third Row: Surprisingly Roomy
With the second row pushed back, third-row legroom is tight but usable. Slide the second row forward, and it becomes much more manageable.
The Tahoe third row includes:
- Ceiling vents
- USB-C ports
- Cup holders
But here’s my biggest safety concern:
There is no middle head restraint.
That means:
- An adult shouldn’t sit in the middle position.
- A child without a car seat shouldn’t sit there either.
For a family vehicle, this is a major oversight.
Access to the third row also feels clunky, especially for younger kids who can’t manage the seat mechanism independently.
Trunk
Cargo Space: Manage Expectations
Behind the third row, trunk space is comparable to the Chevy Traverse — not massive.
If you need serious cargo room behind a full third row, you’ll want:
- Chevy Suburban
- Ford Expedition Max
- Lincoln Navigator L
With the bench seat, I often keep one portion of the third row folded down for flexibility — which works great for three kids.
With the third row folded flat entirely? It’s fantastic. Huge, truck-bed-level cargo space.
A single stroller fits behind the third row.
Double stroller or wagon? It’ll be tight.
Safety
The 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe is a highly rated, safe full-size SUV featuring standard advanced driver-assistance systems across all trims, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and forward collision alerts. It received a 4-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with a 5-star side crash rating.
When it comes to car seat compatibility, there are a few important limitations to keep in mind with this vehicle.
First, the third row does not offer lower anchors, which can make car seat installation more restrictive—especially for families who prefer using the LATCH system.
Another drawback is the lack of a car seat tilt feature. Which can make third row access more difficult if you need a carseat installed in the second row.
Additionally, this vehicle still does not include a head restraint in the middle seating position. This is an important consideration for booster seat use, as proper head support is essential for safety.
Because of this, a harnessed car seat is often the best choice for the middle seat. The Chicco MyFit Harness + Booster Car Seat is a great option here, as it allows you to keep your child in a harness for a longer period of time before transitioning to a booster—making it a safer solution in a position without a head restraint.
