2024 Chevrolet Suburban

The Chevy Suburban was redesigned in 2020. The 2024 model has not major changes. The Suburban received a redesign in 2025.
- Second-Row Comfort & Amenities: The second row includes ceiling vents (great for rear-facing car seats), heated seats, climate controls, USB ports, and even a household-style outlet.
- Spacious Third Row: Unlike many SUVs, the Suburban’s third row offers strong knee and head clearance even for adults. The middle seat is wider than expected, making it more usable than most competitors (just be mindful of the missing middle head restraint).
- Massive Extended Cargo Space: The Suburban is essentially the extended version of the Tahoe, offering about 12 extra inches of trunk space. With the third row up, cargo capacity is impressive — and with both rows folded, it becomes a true family hauler.
The Exterior
Exterior: Big, Bold & Surprisingly Modern
Chevy redesigned its SUV lineup in 2020, and honestly? It was much needed and very well done.
At first, I wasn’t completely sold on the front end. But now, a few years in, I actually love it. Compared to competitors like the Ford Expedition, the Suburban feels more current and futuristic.
Highlights include:
- LED daytime running lights and headlights
- Strong, aggressive hood lines
- Clean grille design
- Blacked-out badging on the RST trim
- 22-inch wheels that give it serious presence
- Hidden rear wiper for a clean back end
This RST trim keeps things sporty with black accents instead of chrome, body-color door handles, black roof rails, and black running boards. It’s sleek, bold, and definitely not shy about its size.
And yes — this is the bus.
If the Tahoe is the standard full-size SUV, the Suburban is essentially the extended version. Think Expedition vs. Expedition Max. You’re getting about 12 extra inches of cargo space.
First Row
Driver’s Seat: Functional, But Not Flashy
Inside, the Suburban keeps things pretty simple.
The door panel design is straightforward, with some red contrast stitching on this trim. There are useful cubbies for water bottles and small items, but nothing revolutionary.
Up front, you’ll find:
- Wireless charging pad
- USB and USB-C ports
- 12-volt outlet
- Multiple cup holders
- Panoramic sunroof
- Heated seats (trim specific)
The center console is wide but not especially deep. It’s functional, but I’ve seen more innovative storage solutions in other vehicles recently. That said, it still provides plenty of usable space for everyday mom life.
Headroom and seating position are excellent — as expected in one of the largest SUVs available.
Second Row
Second Row: Spacious & Practical
With the driver’s seat set for someone about six feet tall, I still had excellent knee and head clearance in the second row.
Key features:
- Ceiling vents (huge for rear-facing car seats)
- Separate climate controls
- Heated second-row seats (trim specific)
- USB ports and a household-style outlet (great for pumping moms)
The captain’s chairs create a wide aisle — much more usable in a full-size SUV than in midsize models. I can comfortably walk between the seats, which makes third-row access easier.
Car Seat Setup
Here’s how it breaks down:
- Lower anchors in both second-row captain’s chairs
- Tether anchors in all five rear seating positions
- No lower anchors in the third row
While seatbelt installs are perfectly safe and common, I do wish Chevy would add third-row lower anchors like the Ford Expedition and Jeep Wagoneer offer. It adds flexibility for families with multiple LATCH-dependent car seats or high-back boosters with LATCH.
Also missing? Rear sunshades.
Third Row
Third Row: Roomy — With One Major Caveat
The Suburban’s third row is genuinely spacious.
Even with the second row pushed back, I had solid knee clearance. The middle seat is wider than many competitors — which is impressive.
Amenities include:
- Ceiling vents
- USB-C ports on both sides
- Cup holders
- Small storage cubbies
However, there is no middle head restraint.
That’s a significant safety consideration. Without a head restraint, adults or booster-aged kids sitting in the middle position are more vulnerable to whiplash in a collision. My recommendation would be to:
- Use that seat for a car seat with its own headrest
- Or avoid using that position when possible
Third-row access requires a two-step fold-and-flip process. It’s manageable, but not the easiest for younger kids to operate independently — and it can’t be done with a car seat installed.
Trunk
Cargo Space: This Is Why You Buy a Suburban
Now let’s talk about the reason families choose the Suburban.
With the third row up?
It’s excellent. Truly spacious and very competitive with other extended-wheelbase SUVs.
There’s also a small underfloor storage area and power-folding second and third rows.
With the seats down?
You’re basically in cargo van territory.
This is a serious family hauler. Road trips, sports equipment, Costco runs — you’ll have room.
Just know: it’s big. It’s not slipping easily into tight garages, and navigating crowded parking lots will remind you that you are driving a bus.
Safety
The 2024 Chevrolet Suburban received a 4-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with 5-star ratings in side-impact tests. It features the standard Chevy Safety Assist suite, including automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, and lane-keep assist.
