Features We Love
  • Family-Friendly Three-Across Car Seat Setup: One of the biggest improvements on the redesigned CR-V is the second row. Honda fixed the seat belt overlap issue from the previous generation, making it much easier to fit three car seats across. For growing families, this is a game-changing upgrade.
  • Completely Redesigned Interior: The cabin feels far more premium with modern styling, honeycomb air vents, textured trim, heated seats, wireless charging, and plenty of smart storage. It looks and feels much more upscale than previous CR-V models.
  • Spacious Cargo Area: The CR-V offers one of the largest cargo areas in its class. It easily fits a stroller with room to spare, making it ideal for everything from grocery runs to family road trips.
  • Fresh, Modern Exterior Styling: The redesigned body gives the CR-V a more rugged, upscale look with sharper lines, a taller stance, and a bold front grille. It's a noticeable improvement that helps the CR-V stand out in a crowded SUV market.

2024 Honda CR-V Review: Why This Family Favorite Is Better Than Ever

The Honda CR-V has been one of the most popular family SUVs for years, and after its full redesign for 2023, the 2024 model continues to build on everything families already loved. With a more modern design, a much-improved interior, and one major fix that parents will especially appreciate, the newest CR-V is easily one of the strongest contenders in the compact SUV segment.

As a mom of three and a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST), I'm always looking at vehicles through a family lens—and the 2024 Honda CR-V impressed me in several key areas.

A Much More Modern Exterior

Honda gave the CR-V a complete refresh, and the new look feels much more upscale than previous generations. The body is squarer, the stance is a little taller, and the sharper body lines give it a more confident appearance on the road.

The front end features a bold Honda badge and a clean, modern grille, while the rear keeps enough of the classic CR-V styling to remain instantly recognizable.

Interior Design Gets a Huge Upgrade

One of the biggest improvements is inside the cabin. Honda completely modernized the interior with higher-quality materials, better textures, and thoughtful design details throughout.

The honeycomb-style air vents are one of my favorite touches—they look great and even the controls have a satisfying, premium feel. Throughout the cabin you'll find textured metallic trim, gloss black accents, heated front seats, wireless phone charging, USB-A and USB-C ports, generous storage, and a roomy center console.

My only complaint? The infotainment screen still feels a little undersized compared to many competitors. Considering how polished the rest of the interior is, the display feels like the one area Honda didn't fully modernize.

Second Row

A Huge Win for Families: The Back Seat Is Finally More Car Seat Friendly

If you've watched my previous CR-V reviews, you know I had one major issue with the older generation.

The previous body style had an unusual seat belt overlap that made three-across car seat installations much more difficult than they should have been. Thankfully, Honda completely fixed that problem on the redesigned CR-V.

That change makes a significant difference for growing families.

Using three Graco SlimFit3 LX convertible car seats, I was able to successfully install three across the second row. That's excellent news for parents who need to maximize seating without moving into a larger SUV.

There are still a few things to keep in mind:

  • Three identical convertible seats fit well.
  • Mixed combinations (boosters, infant seats, and convertibles) may still require some trial and error.
  • Booster seats can be trickier because children need easy access to the seat belt buckle.
  • Infant seat bases may fit while the carrier itself can create spacing challenges.

As always, your specific car seat combination matters, so it's worth testing before purchasing.

One unique feature worth mentioning: the center top tether anchor is mounted in the ceiling instead of behind the seat, which isn't common but is easy to use once you know where to find it.

Comfortable Second Row for Kids and Adults

Even with a forward-facing car seat installed, the second row offers impressive legroom. At nearly six feet tall, I still had good knee room sitting behind the driver's seat set for my driving position.

Rear passengers also get:

  • Two USB-C charging ports
  • Rear air vents
  • Large door pockets with cup holders
  • Plenty of headroom

While sitting next to a car seat can feel a little snug, the overall passenger space is excellent for a compact SUV.

Excellent Cargo Space

The CR-V continues to shine when it comes to cargo room.

The power liftgate on the EX-L trim makes loading easy, and the cargo area is surprisingly large. A Mockingbird stroller fit with room to spare—even without carefully folding or positioning it.

The cargo area is wide, deep, and tall, making it practical for:

  • Strollers
  • Grocery runs
  • Sports equipment
  • Road trip luggage
  • Everyday family gear

For busy families, that's a huge advantage.

Safety

The 2024 Honda CR-V continues to be one of the safest choices in its class. It earned a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and was also named an IIHS Top Safety Pick, giving families even more confidence behind the wheel.

Great for 1-2 kids. Middle seat is small and uncomfortable for larger child/adult. You can do 3 across if you have slim car seats. Easily fits a stroller in the trunk, but traveling on vacation with two little kids is tight!

This is actually my 16 year olds first car!! Safety was my biggest priority, and knowing it has excellent crash ratings and plenty of driver-assistance features gave me so much peace of mind. It's also the perfect size, easy for a new driver to maneuver but still substantial enough to feel safe on the road. The visibility is great, and the technology is simple enough that it isn't distracting for my teenager. He loves the updated styling and modern interior, which makes him excited to drive it without feeling like it's a "mom car." If you're looking for a dependable, safe, and practical first vehicle for your teen, I honestly don't think you can go wrong with the CR-V.
