For 2025, the 4Runner is fully redesigned. It gets an all-new platform, updated exterior and interior, and new i-FORCE powertrains, including a hybrid option with significantly more power. Toyota also added new trims like Trailhunter and Platinum, along with more modern tech and an updated 8-speed transmission.
The redesigned 2025 4Runner still offers a third-row option, but it’s not standard and not available on every trim. You can get it on select gas models to bring seating up to seven, but many of the new hybrid versions do not offer a third row. So it’s still there if you need it, just with a bit more limitation depending on how you build the car.

Safety Is Significantly Updated With the Redesign
The 2025 4Runner is an all-new vehicle, so safety is expected to improve, but full crash test ratings are still limited as of now. With the redesign, this should be more competitive with newer SUVs.
- IIHS ratings not fully available yet: all-new model means testing is still catching up
New Safety Tech Brings It Up to Modern Standards
This is where you see the biggest upgrade for 2025. It moves from the older system to Toyota’s newer safety suite.
- Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 standard: updated system with improved pre-collision, lane tracing assist, adaptive cruise, and more
- More advanced driver assist features: smoother, more responsive than the previous generation
- Airbags remain standard across the cabin: including front, side, knee, and curtain airbags
Pretensioners Continue in the Front Seats
This setup stays consistent and is still something to be aware of for families.
- Front seats have pretensioners: driver and passenger
- Rear seats do not include pretensioners: something to keep in mind for second-row passengers
Overall, 2025 is a big step forward in afety tech, even though full crash ratings are still being finalized.
