Whenever I’m asked about the best cars to fit three kids across in the second row, the answer is not as straightforward as you would think. With thousands of different car seat combinations, it’s difficult to give a blanket statement of which vehicle works the best. Your car needs are as unique as your family!

Since there are so many factors to consider, I wanted to create a master list to reference the best cars for three car seats across. Here at The Car Mom, we call vehicles that can comfortably handle multiple car seats side-by-side “three-across machines.” These are the cars that tend to make the three-across setup much more manageable during everyday life.

This way, you can have a solid baseline to reference during car shopping, making the process a whole lot smoother. Before we dive in, I know that having three across seems like the most convenient setup, and it can be, but I don’t want you to feel like it’s the only arrangement for an easy transition in and out of the car. My oldest frequently sits in the third row and with practice, getting him in and buckled safely has come easier.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of three across when it’s safe and it makes sense, but other great options are accessible, too.

Let’s dive in and break down everything you need to know about three-across cars!

Which Cars Fit Three Across?

Let's move on to the list of cars that have proven to be excellent options for three across seating! Keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list, but rather a starting point for your research. These cars have been tested by me and have shown a lot of flexibility in accommodating various three across configurations.

5 Passenger SUV Contenders:

The 5 passenger SUV category is the hardest to fit three across because they are the smallest.Below are models that are great options to test out, but they will not fit every car seat combination:

Midsize 7-8 Passenger Contenders:

In the midsize category, there are more options to explore. The following cars provide a lot of space in the second row, allowing them to be a great starting point to fit three car seats across:

Full-Size Contenders:

If you're in need of a full-size car, there are more models to test out! The following cars have great potential to fit  three car seats without sacrificing comfort or cargo space:

Minivan Contenders:

Last but not least, don't overlook the trusty minivans. Although you may consider them classic “mom” cars, their reputation is there for a reason! Consider the following options:

Three Across In The 3rd Row:

Three Across Is Not Possible In Every Car

Three-across is not possible in every car, and honestly, that’s usually not because you’re doing something wrong. There are so many factors that affect whether three car seats will fit safely in one row. Sometimes it’s the width of the vehicle itself, but more often, we see issues like car seat overlap, super narrow seats, bulky armrests, or oddly shaped seat cushions and inclines that make installation difficult.

In some cases, it’s the vehicle. In others, it’s the specific car seats you’re trying to use. Most of the time, it’s a combination of both. That’s exactly why two families can have completely different experiences trying to do three across in the same car.

The good news is that there are usually ways to troubleshoot the setup, and that’s what we’re going to help you navigate today. And because getting a new car seat is usually a whole lot easier than getting a new car, I always recommend exploring different car seat configurations first before assuming you need a different vehicle.

Quick Tips for Fitting Three Car Seats Across

When it comes to fitting three car seats across, there are a few tips you can implement to help everyone fit safely and comfortably. One of the biggest game-changers is choosing slimmer car seats. Reducing the width of each seat can make a huge difference when you’re trying to maximize every inch of second-row space.

Here are a few three-across-friendly seats we frequently recommend as a starting point:

Three Across Friendly Convertible Car Seats:

  • Britax Poplar: A slimmer convertible car seat that tends to work really well in tighter second rows.
  • Graco SlimFit3 LX: Another great convertible option specifically designed with narrow setups in mind.

Three Across Friendly Booster Seats

  • Peg Viaggio Flex 120 Booster: One of my favorite slimmer booster options for older kids in a three-across setup. It has an optional LATCH installation and is super narrow at the base for easier access to the buckle.

Three Across Friendly Infant Seats

For infant seats, I would first look at a baseless seat because it can help save valuable space in tighter rows. These seats connect directly to LATCH instead of relying on a bulky base.

A few infant seats we like for three-across situations include:

This is a great place to start when you’re looking for car seats that are more three-across friendly. Of course, this is not a comprehensive list because it depends so much on your vehicle, your kids’ ages, and the combination of seats you’re using. But if you’re trying to troubleshoot a tight backseat, these are the seats we would look at first.

My Three-Across Car Seat Setup

One of the questions I get all the time is how I fit three car seats across in my Ford Expedition.

Here's how I arrange my three kids:

  • Driver-side seat: Infant car seat
  • Middle seat: Forward-facing car seat
  • Passenger-side seat: Rear-facing convertible car seat

I load my infant first and click her infant seat into the driver-side position behind me. This works best for our family because I have more room to maneuver on that side of the garage.

Next, I buckle my daughter into her rear-facing convertible seat on the passenger side.

My oldest rides forward-facing in the middle seat. One thing I love about this three-across setup is that he can easily crawl underneath the infant seat to get into position. Since he still needs the most help buckling, having him in the middle allows me to reach him easily from the driver's seat and make sure he's safely secured before I buckle myself in.

As my kids grow, this arrangement may change. When my oldest moves into a booster seat, a middle seating position will only work if there is proper head support behind him. Headrests aren't just for comfort. They're an important safety feature for all passengers, including children in booster seats.

That's one of the reasons I always appreciate vehicles that offer headrests in every seating position when planning a three-across car seat configuration.

Lower Anchors vs. Seat Belt Install: Will A Seat Belt Install Give You More Room?

It absolutely can.

In many vehicles, installing a car seat with the vehicle seat belt instead of the lower anchors can give you a little extra room, which can make a huge difference when you’re trying to fit multiple car seats across.

One thing I always want parents to know is that a properly installed seat belt installation is just as safe as using the lower anchors. In fact, trying a seat belt install is one of my favorite tricks when families are struggling with tighter car seat setups.

If you’re trying to maximize space in your backseat, this is definitely something worth experimenting with.

As always, make sure to double-check both your vehicle manual and car seat manual to confirm the correct installation method for your specific setup.

Here’s What NOT To Do…

We need to be careful about how we defining “it fits!” when it comes to three carseats in the second row.

  • Are any seatbelts overlapping?
  • Are your carseats bending at any point?
  • Is the installation tight enough for each individual seat?

There are variations that allow a tight, safe install for three seats - just make sure that’s the case for your combination of car seats when installed three across.

Testing Multiple Three Car Seats Across Combos

It's important to keep in mind that not all car seat combinations are created equal. When considering a long-term car purchase, make sure to test out multiple three car seats across combinations. Maybe your kids are fitting just fine right now, but if your oldest turns forward facing, does that change your fit? Just because three convertible car seats fit doesn't necessarily mean two convertibles and a booster will fit as well. It’s all about testing it out!

There may be variations in buckle placements, seat sizes, or other factors that can affect the feasibility of the setup. Sometimes, flipping a rear-facing seat forward can make a big difference. It may require some extra effort to test combinations, but it saves you the headache (and cost) of having to buy a new car down the line to accommodate your changing car seat needs.

Remember, this list is a solid foundation of options for three across seating, but it doesn't cover every single car that can accommodate various combinations. Car seat brands and sizes can differ, so it's always a good idea to test out your specific car seat combination before making a final decision.
