Luxury versus affordable cars… which is right for you?

The market for vehicles in general is incredibly competitive, so new vehicles of all price ranges are designed to be on par with each other. That being said, the physical makeup of luxury vehicles is better. The materials each vehicle is made up of tend to be more high end, but that also means you are paying a premium for it.

With cars nowadays having a starting MSRP that feels like a luxury vehicle, there is no need to spend additional money for specific features or tech alone. Modern vehicles (luxury and affordable) are all equipped with virtually the same attributes, so you don’t have to shop the high-end market if that’s all you’re interested in. Although I love the look and vibe of luxury cars, there are some affordable vehicles I prefer way more!

Cadillac Escalade

The Cadillac Escalade is one of the most iconic luxury SUVs on the market, and after driving the refreshed 2026 model, it's easy to see why. The interior is stunning, the technology feels intuitive, and the overall driving experience is exactly what you'd expect from a flagship luxury SUV.

While it isn't my top pick for families prioritizing car seat functionality, it still offers plenty of space, premium features, and everyday comfort. If luxury is your top priority, the Escalade absolutely delivers!  After spending time in the refreshed 2026 model, I can confidently say it's still one of the nicest interiors on the market.

From a family perspective, the Escalade gets a lot right. It offers a spacious cabin, thoughtful features like power soft-close doors, a rear camera mirror, and plenty of comfort for passengers in every row.

That said, it isn't the most car seat-friendly option in the full-size SUV segment. Families who regularly need third-row access with car seats installed may find competitors like the Navigator a little easier to live with. But if luxury, comfort, and everyday drivability are at the top of your list, the Escalade is still an excellent choice.

Pros of the Cadillac Escalade

• Beautiful, high-end interior
• Excellent technology, including Super Cruise and a rear camera mirror
• Power soft-close doors are incredibly convenient for families
• Comfortable second and third rows with ceiling vents
• Generous cargo space (and even more in the ESV)

Cons of the Cadillac Escalade

• No built-in second-row sun shades
• No car seat-friendly tilt for easier third-row access
• No lower anchors in the third row
• No middle head restraint in the third row

Lincoln Navigator

The Lincoln Navigator is one of the strongest full-size luxury SUV options for families, especially if car seat functionality is a top priority. It has the size, comfort, and luxury feel you’d expect at this price point, but what really makes it stand out is how well it works for families with multiple kids in car seats.

From a comfort perspective, the Navigator feels spacious, plush, and easy to live with. The seats are incredibly comfortable, the second and third rows have ceiling vents, and the extended wheelbase gives you plenty of usable cargo space.

Some of the tech doesn’t feel quite as integrated as the Escalade, and I wish it had built-in sun shades, but from a functionality standpoint, this is one of the best luxury SUVs in the category.

With the Lincoln Navigator “L” this gives an extended wheelbase, meaning you have an additional foot added to an already large trunk.

Pros

• Excellent car seat setup for a full-size SUV
• Car seat-friendly tilt works with captain’s chairs or bench seat
• Lower anchors in both second-row seats and both third-row outboard seats
• Tether anchors across the third row
• Comfortable, spacious third row with a middle head restraint
• Ceiling vents in both the second and third rows
• Power-folding second and third rows from the trunk

Cons

• No built-in second-row sun shades
• Cupholder placement in the second row is not my favorite
• Tech/screens feel less integrated than some competitors
• Trunk is usable, but some extended-wheelbase competitors offer more space

Full Size SUV Amenities Breakdown

It’s important to me not just to show the luxury vehicles and their amenities, but also how they compare to the more affordable competitors on the market. Here is a an overall breakdown of how each full size vehicle compares to each other:

 My Top Midsize Luxury Vehicles:

• Buick Enclave
• Lexus TX
• Volvo XC90

Buick Enclave

I am obsessed with the Buick Enclave!I The exterior is sharp, the interior is beautiful, and it gives you a lot of the space you want before jumping into something as large as an Escalade.

From a family perspective, I think the Enclave is a great option for someone who wants space, style, and tech, but maybe does not need the most intense car seat setup. It has a roomy second row, a comfortable third row, ceiling vents, great cargo space, and car seat tilt for easier third-row access. My biggest misses are the lack of a bench seat option, no lower anchors in the third row, and no built-in sun shades.

Pros

• Beautiful redesign with a more elevated, luxury feel
• Very spacious for a midsize three-row SUV
• Comfortable second row with great knee room and ceiling vents
• Car seat tilt for easier third-row access
• Tether anchors in all five rear seating positions
• Large trunk with extra underfloor storage

Cons

• No bench seat option
• No lower anchors in the third row
• No built-in second-row sun shades
• Interior color options feel limited
• White interior looks beautiful but may not be the most family-friendly
• Third row feels a little more bare bones compared to the rest of the car

Lexus TX

The Lexus TX was in the running for the Car Mom 2023 Car of the Year. Yes, it’s that good. Although it didn’t win, I think this vehicle is incredible for families with a higher budget looking for a vehicle to really last the test of time. With a starting MSRP of $55,500, you are getting a ton of bang for your buck.

The TX is one of the newer models from the Lexus lineup and honestly, it was so needed. Considering this car is built on the same platform as the Grand Highlander, these cars have a lot in common. Let me put it out there first: the exterior is not my favorite. I love almost everything about the TX’s interior, but for the price, I think it could look way sportier.

In the first row, Lexus finally amped up their infotainment system to what is needed to compete in this luxury midsize market. It’s got everything you want, plus a lot of safety features that make driving it easy. I’m a big fan of the crash prevention tech it has included.

In the second row, there are both captain’s chairs and bench seating available. I tested out the captain’s chairs and had a great experience with car seat install, but I also strongly believe you’d be able to fit three car seats across the bench.

The third row of the TX truly makes this vehicle. There’s a nice Tilt and Slide and comes with two really comfortable third row seats instead of the useless middle seat. Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 continues to be one of my favorite luxury SUVs for families who don't need a huge vehicle. Volvo has done a great job keeping the XC90 feeling timeless, and the refreshed 2025 model builds on that with a beautiful interior, thoughtful technology, and one of the best plug-in hybrid options in the segment. While it's smaller than competitors like the Lexus TX or Mercedes GLS, it makes excellent use of its space and remains one of the safest family vehicles on the road.

From a family perspective, I'd recommend the bench seat over the captain's chairs. The built-in booster seat is a game changer for three-across setups, and the bench gives you much more flexibility than the tiny third row. While the third row works well for occasional use, it's not one I'd plan on using every day. Volvo's focus on safety really shines here, with features like rear-seat pretensioners and the integrated booster that you simply won't find in most competitors.

• Built-in booster seat with the bench seat
• Three-across capable with the right car seats
• Built-in second-row sun shades
• Rear-seat pretensioners in both the second and third rows
• Comfortable, thoughtfully designed interior
• Bench seat available without sacrificing a higher trim level

Cons

• No car seat-friendly tilt for third-row access
• Third row is best for occasional, not everyday, use
• No ceiling vents (vents are located in the side pillars instead)
• Limited cargo space with the third row in use
• No third-row tether anchors when equipped with the bench seat
• Storage in the front row is a little limited

The first row is exactly what you’d expect from a vehicle in this price point. The infotainment system is really high tech and includes features such as seat belt indicators and Heads Up display. I do wish the screen itself was slightly larger.

The XC90 is available in both bench and captain’s chairs, but I HIGHLY recommend the bench seat. It’s versatile, wide, comfortable, and has a high likelihood of fitting three across based on your car seat combination. What makes it most unique is the seats aren’t broken up into certain percentages of the overall bench, but designed as their own individual chairs. I love when cars have this!

Which Luxury Family Vehicle Is Right For You?

Although there are a ton of really great affordable vehicles to choose from if you just want upgraded tech and features, the physical makeup of luxury cars cannot be stated enough. Each option on this list is stunning, but also includes a really comfortable interior that makes driving your family an experience every time.

If you can afford the expensive price tag these vehicles come with, I highly recommend giving them a test drive.
